I'm trying to transfer videos from my desktop to my laptop for editing. My problem is that whenever I open them in FCP it tells me that it tells me that files are missing....

Can anybody give me a remedy to this problem?

thanks

question(s):
where are you getting this error. the laptop or the desktop? im assuming the laptop.
what method did you use to do a transfer?
are you starting a new project to edit this video? or are you using a previous save file from your desktop?

give us more details on your current situation and we can help you out more effectively

Yes I'm getting the message on my laptop. I'm trying to transfer the video for editing on my laptop. I tried transfering it through a firewire cable. It's a fcp file saved on my desktop.

I keep getting a missing file error on my laptop.

well, im assuming that file error is coming from fcp and its saying that it cant find the media files and you have a choice of reconnect or continue. Click reconnect and a new window should open. Select locate/search (i forget which one is the better choice) and then find where you transfered your clips in your laptop.
This is happening because your save file from the desktop still thinks its still on the desktop. your clips are not really missing, but instead, your fcp doesnt know where the clips are on the laptop.
in addition to the clips you want to edit, final cut pro may also annoy you by saying more clips are missing, but its really the render files are missing.

Okay thanks a lot for the help. I'll try your suggestion. If it doesn't work...I'll be making a post quite soon.

yeah i think you just moved the FCP project file, and no actual media.

thats another possilbility.
Final cut pro is not like imovie. it does not store the media files on a save file. it stores all media being used on what is called a "scratch disk." its the area in your hard drive so fcp knows where to work.

Use the Media Manager's "MOVE" or "COPY" function when transporting footage between Desktop and Laptop. It will create a new project file with the edits and bring the footage along with it. The best bet is to use an external drive and capture all the media and render files to that drive. You can then move your project to wherever you want as the path to the files doesn't change.
