It's just like installing Divx on Windows for Windows Media Player. The Divx QuickTime plugin enables you to watch Divx encoded video, usually found in .AVI files, in QuickTime player or anything that uses QuickTime for video playback (like FrontRow).

There is one significant difference, and that's the serendipitous bug in winWMP that allows mp3 in avi is not recapitulated in QT, so the divx codec added its own file parser to replicate it (in version 5.0.3 IIRC). Unfortunately, this file parser only agrees to work with divx/mp3 (no other combination), so the fellow who wrote it added a "delegate" component that simply routed xvid through the same path. Problem is, his site has been broken for a while now, and I don't know of a replacement. So long story short, the divx codec for mac works just like the one for PC, except it only works for Divx video with mp3 audio in avi, not for other combinations like xvid or ac3
