There is no "dvd" format. DVD's (IIRC) use MPEG-2 for video and AIFF or AC3 (Dolby) for audio...if you want to burn a video to DVD you'll want to put it into those formats.

A friend has given me a 3.2gb AVI file from his home dv camera. I'm guessing its uncompressed as the movie only goes for 17minutes. I used Toast7 to turn it into a DVD however the end result was quite pixelated. It seems it squished the 3.2gb file down to around 600mb and then burnt it.

Is there any way to preserve the quality?

Toast 7 is a great, easy to use way to do this, but costs money. FFMPEGX is shareware that can do the same thing, but is not nearly as easy to use.

Other converting info can be found at http://www.videohelp.com
