I am currently taking a class where i have to create an Imovie project. This movie will then be created into a DVD with a cover and all. Tomorrow i am going to start taking all the footage but dont know what resolution will be ok? I have a digital camera i just bought and it takes videos in 640x480, will this be ok?

iMovie is meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders. full stop.

you can teach the old dog some tricks to import other formats etc, but that needs skills, tools and knowledge...

usb? NoGo! flash mem, hd, microDV, whatever? big trouble....

the iApps are meant for simplicity & convenience - so, no drivers, resolutions, settings, bitrates, whatever
get any miniDV camcorder, get a fw cable - boom!done... to quote the CEO of a minor computer manufacturer.....

If the camera records MP4 in 640x480 you can connect it via USB and use the Finder to drag the movies onto your hard drive. iMovie (current version) will import MP4. The quality will not be as good as DV but it might be acceptable. That's your call. A mini-DV Firewire based camcorder is optimal.

i do have a mini DV camcorder, Canon Zr85. will that do the job?

i have an option to either use the 1GB memory stick i have, which will directly move on to the computer. Or i can record on a mini DV ?

I'd recommend just recording on a miniDV. iMovie is pretty much straight-forward, plug in the camera, capture your clips, then start cutting.

You should always go for the best quality picture possible. Settle for nothing less, your final product will thank you.
I gotta have more cowbell.
