HELP! -- iMovie 4 DV import stutters

I'm trying to import DV into iMovie 4. I've tried 2 cameras, a PD150 and a brand new Panasonic PV-DV300. Both result in the same problem; dropped audio and dropped video frames, so it must be something with the computer. I've used iMovie before, but it's been a while, and I've upgraded to Tiger since then. I've run Onyx (repair permissions, clean caches, etc); I have 15gb free on the internal drive, I've tried an external drive, and the machine is a 1ghz TiBook with a gig of ram. I've removed all but the AC4 codec from the QuickTime folder. I even tried the Garageband trick that was supposed to help with iMovieHD. Nothing seems to help.

Any ideas on how to fix this are appreciated.
