Personally I use MacAmp Lite X, I find the interface of that a bit more refined than VLC. If you download the large version you will get all the audio decoders it supports along with it, including FLAC (though sadly not AAC).

You might want to use an utility like Max to convert the FLACs into Apple Lossless, mp3, or AAC.
