Has the ability to handle muxed mpeg-2 files been addressed in recent version of iMovie? Or will it be addressed in teh future?

I know that I can demux these files with Mpeg Streamclip, then import them to iMovie. A camcorder I'm looking at saves the video in ths format and although I am OK with the importation routine, it would be really nice for the rest of my family if iMovie would recognise the native format.

mpegs are a delivery format, enf-of-the-road, not meant for further processing... nice for playback, bad for editing (don't store every frame...)

iMHD5/6 support import of mpeg2 - as on HDcamcorders (HiDef); needs some "hints" in the firewire stream; gets automatically converted to Apple Lossless Codec; and needs some "special setting" mpeg on tape… (has to do with b-, p- and i-frames...)

I don't expect support of miniDVDcamcorders - these gadgets are useless for a real edit experience, they're like that KodakBoxes, 90y ago... mpeg4 (recording format of some still-cams with movin'pic ability) is slightly supported via import thru iPhoto...

iM is a consumer product/FCP does support native mpeg2 edit, e.g. for ENG-harddisk recoders...
Apple likes quality - miniDV/HD-miniDV... now comes ADHD-DVD, but same dilemma...

first problem to solve is a disk-media for HDcontent/BluRay superdrives....

> iMHD5/6 support import of mpeg2...

Are you saying that I *can* import mpeg2 into iMHD5/6 through the Apple Lossless Codec?

Does this include the sound, or will I still need Mpeg StreamClip to get video + sound?

Thanks,

I'm going to give mgep4 a try. This lets me get a solid state, compact digicam with mpeg4 video. I'm not looking for miniDV quality here, and the camera form factor is important. The 640x480 30fps is more than adquate considering I'll be able to bring the camera with me and get it to places of video interest, and I can join clips simple enough in iMovie.
