I am trying to compress a voice only podcast as small as I can, and am willing to put up with telephone quality (it's long, and the target audience has low bandwidth). What software should I use, and what settings?
I'd like to be able to use something that I have already (GB3, iTunes, Audacity etc) thanks for the help,

iTunes should be enough. There's a preset for podcasts which is set at 32kbps/mono and 65kbps/stereo.

It might be different between versions, but on 4.9 (yeah, I'm running a really old version) you go to Preferences -> Import, select AAC-encoder and then there's a quick-setting for podcasts.

I agree with Jacke, though I'd stick with MP3 files. Not all of your audience may have Quicktime and be able to play AAC files. There are lots of options in the MP3 encoder preferences. Try a couple, see what hits a good spot for quality and file size. Best of luck!
