I was looking to use a canon SD 800 IS link to take some home movies, nothing too radical, just standard baby/wife's pregnancy kind of stuff to edit in iMovie and iDVD. It looks like he camera takes 640x480 30 fps movies for up to an hour. What are the advantages of using a camcorder over this camera?

I have the SD500 and use it to make movies. The quality is great and its so easy to just copy the file vs. import from tape. It's also good to have one device to do movies and pictures.

I will probably buy the SD800 soon. (after I recover from spending almost $9k on a Mac Pro).

As long as you buy it first as a camera and second as a mini-video camera, you should be happy.

I would say the quality is circa-1999 video camera quality, and is really only limited by your memory card.
