My brother-in-law made a mistake on some of his menus on a DVD, but now he wants to fix it. The problem is that he's now using a different machine so we don't want to reimport all the footage again--especially since it was heavily edited. So what can we do to rip it from a home-made DVD back into iMovie?

You should be able to do this easily with MPEG Streamclip. Export to DV format and you'll be good to go in iMovie.
