Hi folks, back again with another "challenge"
Last Saturday while instaling my new Final Cut Studio software my new Mac Pro refused to read the DVD Studio Pro 4 disc. On closer examination I discovered that the disc had a kind of ingrown bubble, and was unusable.
So I phoned Apple and got through to a very helpful American guy (I'm from Ireland) who said no problem, our fault, there's a new disc on it's way, three working days. He then qualified that by saying it would be a good idea to phone again during the week as he wasn't sure that his order would transfer properly to Europe. (All calls go to U.S. at weekends). He also said it would be a good idea to wipe OS X and re-install it, then reinstall FCS from scratch... just to be sure there would be no glitches down the line.
I followed his advice and phoned Apple again on the Monday and got through to a slightly grumpy German guy (I have a few German friends, so this is not an anti-whatever tirade). He said no way three days... four weeks to send the replacemant disc. I told him he had to be kidding, I'm running a business here, I've got a pile of work to do, and I need to start editing now. But he wasn't budging. He then suggested I could just finish instaling the Studio software with the remaining discs, author and burn using the basic iLife DVD software, and when the replacement DVD Studio Pro 4 disc arrived, just install that in with everything else.
So who do I listen to? And is Apple acting the bollox with the four week wait? What would you do?

Well, since you're running a business...I would recommend installing FCS minus DVDSP, and keep on working the best you can. I don't believe that it would take 4 weeks to get a replacement disc, therefore, I would recommend calling Apple again and talk to a supervisor or something. I live in the US, so taking 4 weeks does seem a bit long, so I can't really say what to expect for overseas shipping.
I understand that this is a setback to your workflow, but my only advice when calling is to keep your cool, don't try to argue or get them mad, just be cool.

Thanks MR, that makes sense to talk to them again.
In the meantime I'm hitting a wall when I try to install FCS minus DVDSP. In the Custom Install window, I uncheck the DVDSP - but it still insists that I install the DVDSP disc. Of course if I do install the disc nothing happens as ít ís damaged... leaving me with no other option but to cancel.

I can't remember this exactly, but can tell you tomorrow when I install FCS on one of our other machines here...but there is other media on the DVDSP install disc...templates and other DVD related media. Make sure that stuff is unchecked as well. If that fails, you can try to run the installer by one program at a time. I.E. Install Final Cut, then run the installer again for Motion, then again for STP. The Livetype media and Apple loops discs have their own individual installers on their respective discs. Try that out and let us know how it works out.

Looks like we have some success here! The only way I could get the applications to install was to insert each disc seperately. Had a quick run around with them all and it looks like they are operaing just fine. I guess I won't be 100% sure until I've completed a project in it's entirety, but fingers crossed.
As for the four week wait, I followed your advice and phoned Apple again, explained my situation and got some results... we're down to a couple of days now.
MRTrauffer... Thank you for your excellent advice.. very greatly appreciated!
