I’ve recently downloaded an MP3 that was "incomplete" by 5 seconds. To rectify this, I imported it in to "Felt Tip Sound Studio" using QuickTime, with a 48000 bit rate, 16 bit stereo and 8 bit mono. I then used the "Fade Out" command at the end of the track to make the "cut out" seem smoother.
When I saved it as an AIFF,(Felt Tip can’t save as MP3s), I dragged it to SoundJam to convert it to an MP3 again.
Now this is when the trouble starts. I encoded it at 128kbps, stereo, auto kHZ and joint stereo.
I then went to play this MP3 in iTunes in
OS 9.1 and ...I could hear the song...but there was periodic
"tapping" and "crackling" in the background – almost as though it were an old vinyl record.
I tried to rectify the problem by encoding the AIFF directly in iTunes to see if it were the encoder that SoundJam uses...but to no avail. There was still crackling in the background!
When I rebooted and started up
OS X, the crackling stopped. I’m playing it now... in the
carbonized version of iTunes and there is no crackling.

. Am I confused? You wanna bet...
Even running OS 9.1 iTunes under Classic in OS X, there is
no crackling!!!
I think that it must be a problem in OS 9.1. I’ll try and ditch the sound prefs...and reinstalling iTunes...but I don’t think that it’s gonna help...or change anything.
Can anyone help me remove this crackling in OS 9.1 then?
Play it cool
