Hi everyone. I've got a number of MPEG-2 movies that I can't use on my Mac, but I can play on my Windows box running a software decoder like Elecard.
What I need to figure out though is how to burn a VCD with an MPEG-2 file on my Mac. I tried the Video CD option in Toast Titanium 5.1, and it returns and error asking me "use the VIdeo CD option in your MPEG encoder / mixer."
Is there an app I can do this with? And cheaply?
I've got iMovie, but I don't know if that'll do it.

it doesn't get any cheaper than free
first you need to decode the MPEG2 to a format quicktime can play. I recommend MacMPEG2Decoder. I've also heard that this other variant is highly optimized for G4's (I have a G3 so I haven't bothered; you can read about it here). Then there's MacMPEG2Converter about which I know almost nothing, aside from the impression that it is not tested under OS X.
Any of these programs should be able to get your file into a quicktime codec of your choice (animation is lossless but large, Photo-jpeg will look pretty damn good and Toast's encoder probably won't care about the quality loss). Then you can import that file into Toast.

Dang. I tried both of those apps you posted, and they return a "invalid Hoffman code" error. Bizarre. Am I going to have to look for something like Media Cleaner then? Doesn't it take FOREVER to decode / convert something like this (or so I've heard)?

hmmm, where did these mpeg2 files come from?
before messing with Cleaner (it is very slow, especially with mpeg2), you might want to post your problem on this forum. they tend to know more technical things there...
also, if you can play them on windows, you might want to look for a Windows VCD program. If you only have a burner on your mac, I bet it is possible to author the VCD in Windows, and then open the disk image file in Toast. is it possible you damaged the files by viewing them in Windows?
