I have an audio file that is one hour long. I'd like to split it up into smaller, more manageable chunks. Perhaps something like 8 equally sized chunks, like 7.5 minutes apiece. What's the fastest/easiest way to do this?

It is now a .MOV file, but will eventually be converted to .MP3.

Thanks!

SoundEdit 16... an old program but a quick and reliable way to do what you need (although no mp3 encoding).
Or... if you have a full version of the Quicktime player, open the .mov file, try highlight the amount you want in the progress bar, copy, and paste into a new document. Repeat. And convert the remains into .mp3s.

If you do not have SoundEdit 16, QuickTime Pro will allow you to break up the files into smaller segments.

Simply copy and past the sections into new player windows, and "Save As..." selecting "Make movie self-contained."

Assuming the ".mov" files contain AIFF tracks (see info panel for "Sound Track" in the QuickTime Player), you can then encode them to MP3s with your favorite encoder. If not, you will need to select "Export..." and choose "Sound to AIFF" instead of "Save As..." above.

There's also a great shareware thing called soundsampler, do a search. I know it's at www.missingmanual.com, somewhere! It's a great little app/convertor.

Actually

If you have SounEdit 16 you should also have (or able to get) SWA Export.

This was actually the very first way to make high quality MP3s on a mac

So yes, SE16 *does* encode to MP3

(it just can't play them back )
