I tried to do it with media cleaner 4, but it didn't work. Unless the new version lets you do it I think you are out of luck.

The Real format is a highly compressed, proprietary format -- pretty much like all other streaming media formats. Once you compress into Real, there's no way to convert to another format. This has been asked of Real time and again on their developer's listserv, but the reality is that in order to stream the file effectively, you have to throw away a lot of data. When that data gets tossed and the leftover bits are arranged for playback in Real's player, there is absolutely no way to get that lost information back.

In theory, Real could write a .rm to .mov converter, because they are the owners of the compression algorithms. But that's about as likely as Windows Media Player for Mac ever being on par with WiMP on Windoze.

Hi:

I do it all the time.
It's Micky Mouse.
You don't get stereo, only mono.
Which is fine for some of "my" music.
Such as Indian Flute Songs, India Bansuri,Bhajans, and Ragas.

So it all depends on what you want off Real Player.
You have to experiment.
In the meantime if you can find the CD, do.
But one can't always.
Here is what I do.

I put Plain Talk Mic in front of one of my external speakers, facing
away from the computer to cut out computer noises.

!. While Real Player Plays, record simultaneously with MicNotePad Lite WITHOUT COMPRESSION. (You have to play with this a little to get it just right, including right volume.) Otherwise I use default settings.

2. The MicNotePad sound file is then dropped on SoundApp
and converted to AIFF. I use default settings.

3. The AIFF file is then dropped onto Blade Enc and converted to Quicktime mp3. I use default settings.

What you get is 44.1 Hkz, Mono, 16 bits, MPEG Layer 3 Audio.

i've done this many times and it never fails.

Try Snapz Pro 2.0 from Ambrosia http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com. Snapz can record what happens on your monitor and what comes out of your speakers so everything remains digital.

When you get snapz, open the realVideo file and hit stop. now do the macro to open snapz, choose a selection with a fixed position, double click on the selection and hit play on the realplayer. hitting the snapz macro stops recording and starts compressing. Of course the quicktime file you get wont be as small as the realvideo file, but you'll have it in quicktime so you can edit it.

you should have atleast a G3/350 (slower macs would drop frames).
have fun!

With regard to the "placing the mic in front of the speaker" solution...

I have been able to successfully patch the mic jack to the speaker jack. I used a stereo to stereo jack (although a stereo to mono jack might work better). I plugged the stereo out into the mic in. However, the Macintosh still needs a line level microphone, so I used a device called "AnyMic" (I think) which converts a standard mic jack into a line level plug. There may be some way to have a custom "stereo to line level microphone" cable made, which would be perfect...

I record with SimpleSound, using the "Microphone" as the sound source.

I would think that if you're using an all USB setup (both speaker and microphone) it may be possible to do something even more streamlined... although that might require someone to write a little piece of shareware to accomplish the task... anyone?

Hi,

I can't help you with converting a Real video but if you want to convert a Real Audio, you need a PC program (sorry) called "StreamBox Ripper"(http://www.streambox.com). Newer versions of this software can't convert RealAudio (after a lawsuit) but if you look around in PC newsgroups, you can get an older version which will do the job. I tried it on VirtualPC and it is really good. But remember, it is only useful for audio.

AMP Radio [www.subband.com] can playback RealAudio files (w/ RealAudio plugin installed) and save them into AIFF files.

I thought the important word in this sentence was videos so I'm guessing that putting a mic in front of the speaker ain't a lot of use!

Apple have signed a licensing deal with Real (Not Good News) so we can expect Real support in the full new version of Quicktime. Adobe have also signed a deal with Real (It rhymes!!!) so expect Real support in the next version of Premiere also.

You can of course obtain a copy of Real Producer G2 but would that be too difficult?

I am betting that BGK was wanting to convert them so that he wouldn't have to use RealPlayer to watch them. I have tried a few different version of RealPlayer and it always crashes my computer. If Quicktime supports the format that will be a god-send.

Elwells: You should try Snapz Pro also. Makes recording any audio you can play a snap You too Christopher.

yes, that's exactly it. I don't want to use real player if I can possibly help it. I have a few saved things that I like, and I would love to run them through quicktime instead. I was hoping for an easy solution, something that could be done that I've overlooked, but so far nothing. it looks like I'll have to wait until something comes together between the two companies so that some kind of filter or converter is created.

I want the ability to sleep in the snow, if I have to. I want the ability to want to.
