avi/mpg->mov translation troubles

I have some tv clips that I have to make into .movs and piece together in FCP. I can hear the sound of the mpg files, but I can not get QT (or FCP) to play the sound of the avi. If I try to export the mpg as a mov, the sound does not get saved.

Any ideas how I can make a QT mov out of an avi? Or get an avi to platy w/sound?
