Just a guess because I actually haven't done it. . .
1. Remove old HD.
2. Put in new HD.
3. Boot from system disc.
4. Format HD.
5. Fill up HD.

I've added a 15GB, 30GB and now 80GB hard drive to my B&W G3 (while keeping my original 6GB). Archangel is right. Aside from backups of personal documents, just follow his instructions. Apple's Disk Setup program will take care of the formatting. That's the only software you need (aside from a boot CD). I don't even know what Software Architect is!

they're right. I have a Pismo 400, and I've traded HD's in and out 3 times, thusly-
IBM Travelstar 6GB --> Hitachi 12 GB --> IBM Travelstar 6 GB (the same one) --> Hitachi 12 GB
The IBM was the stock drive from Apple. The first Hitachi was sold to me by the vendor. When it died after six months, Hitachi jerked me around for a while, so I had to reinstate the IBM for a while, then finally I got a replacement from Hitachi. At no point did I need any software or hardware, other than a screwdriver and the boot disc that came with the machine
upgrading RAM and HD on this machine are amazingly easy...

I think it's because it's so small and hot in there. I've never had a HD crash on a desktop system, but my Pismo's drive (Hitachi) crashed about three times before it died completely, all in about 6 months. It might be just one bad drive, I don't know
Also, notebook drives only run at 4200 RPM, as opposed to 5400 or 7200 for desktops.
I really doubt that a padded sack would be very much protection, and it would be a hassle. I think most of the damage to the drive originates from the other components of the machine, unless you're throwing it around and letting the cat sleep on it...

This makes sence so the Ti could potentialy have more drive problems as the G4 makes more heat etc...
