It could be some files from an earlier version of WMP that are lingering on your hard drive. Look in the "Read Me"-file and see if there are any files they say you should manually remove before installing.
I'm using WMP 7 final for Mac and .asx redirectors work fine - at least the ones I create. I have noticed a few at windowsmedia.com error on the Mac but not on Windows.
It would help if you gave the exact error message you're getting or describe what happens when you try to open a .asx on the Mac.
I am using WMP 7 and a actual .ASX file that came from a PC. The icon changed to a WMP icon but it tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I downloaded WMP 6.3 and it works fine in that one.
