I've tried using Cleaner to encode real media, and it took forever, and the resulting file had terrible compression, and it was only about 5 minutes of the original 20 minute clip, and the sound was out of sync. I didn't do any further tweaking.
what you really want to do to convert to or from Windows Media, is to get VirtualPC and
VirualDub (go to the bottom to find the old/altered versions that support importing windows media formats).
<font color = red>edit:</font> now that I think about it, I don't think virtualDub can export to asf or wmv. It can encode the video and audio, but I think the final product will be in an avi wrapper (which I consider to be the optimal solution anyway). But Microsoft offers a free asf encoder so you might as well use that.
