how much does it hold? does it depend on the quality you encode the video at? or is it like audio cd's in that it's a fixed amount of time?

iDVD 1.0 = 60min.
iDVD 2.0 = 90min.
DVD Studio Pro can go beyond 90 min, depending upon how you encode the video/audio

Actually when you use iDVD 2 or others to burn at more than 60 min it changes down the quality. iDVD will give you a message and let you know if it is okay to use the lower quality.

i read somewhere that it is possible to have over 200 minutes if the quality is roughly that of a VHS cassette .. any idea what exactly is meant by VHS quality? 320x240, 15fps, MPEG-1?

My guess would be if it is VCD quality.
which is.

Video:
1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1
352 x 240 pixels
29,97 frames/second
(23,976 frames/second NTSC Film)

Audio:
224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

it comes out to about 10 MB / minute... which would lead one to believe you could get about 470 minutes onto a DVD.
I would be interested to know if anyone has done this, and gotten it to play on a settop DVD player.

wow, thanks so much, that was a great wealth of information.

i guess i'd have to use some sort of professional software, though, to be able to write to that format (can't do it in iDVD, can you?) ...do you know if i'd still be able to use DVD menus/features? any information on how to actually burn the dvd this way (software required, etc) woudl be really helpful..

thanks again so much for your help already..

I actually dont own a Mac yet - I will be looking at getting the iMac once I get a vacation out of the way...
Most of my experience is with burning VCDs off a PeeCee.
I know the VCD format supports a title screen, but I dont think it is a working menu. I have yet to try this.
I also do not know about iDVD. from what I have read, it seems kinda limited, so I would guess you would need Toast to burn Mpeg-1 files to a DVD to increase time. but if I am wrong, I would love to hear how others have been burning...
