If QT5Pro can export MPEG-1, then I must be really stupid, cause I haven't seen that option anywhere. Of course, one could always try some of the products from Astarte, that I think can export MPEG. Or Media Cleaner, which can make just about any format from a QT clip.

I don't know if Toast 5 itself can export MPEG1, but it comes with an extension called 'toast VCD support'

with this extension installed, I was able to export an MPEG1, with sound, from Quicktime Pro (the source file was .mov)

The file came out fine, but I have some complaints: There are no options for the mpeg export (like the options that come with the sorenson codec, for example), and while it's exporting, quicktime takes over your machine, and gives no estimate on how long it will take to complete. Media Cleaner, by contrast, gives options like start and end points, adaptive noise reduce, bitrate or total file size limit, and about 3 dozen other choices. It also allows you to pause the encoding at any point (but you have to leave the app running), and it gives a dynamic estimate of the time remaining and expected finishing time
blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer extortion. the X makes it sound cool

Apple orginally promised MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 support for QuickTime 5, but they have announced that it will not come until a later version of QT5.

VCDs are MPEG-1 and that's why you need the Toast plug-in to make VCDs with iMovie (Apple did not include it in QT5 yet or you're still using QT4 so that's the only way iMovie knows what to do with the file). When Apple releases the MPEG codecs for QT5 you will be able to take an iMovie (or use QuickTime Pro 5 and a .mov file) and manually export it using MPEG-1 and choose the compression setting yourself. DVDs use MPEG-2 compression.

The only product that I know of that willl deMUX a MUXed MPEG1 clip is MPEGSplit (included with Sparkle). It only seems to work for me about half of the time however.

If anyone knows of anything else (Free/Shareware or commerical), I would love to know about it.

Check out: http://www169.pair.com/lukifer/dvd.html

I think the only option there was also Sparkle, but maybe one of the other utilites cand do it too.

I messed around with trying to make some VCDs last year, but gave up after a while. I was really excited when I was at Macworld and found out that Toast 5 was going to make VCDs for you. I am also a little disappointed that you don't have any options for quality. But I have not found any other resaonably priced software for a home/hobby user.
