In iMovie 2, is it possible to put still images in the middle of a video clip? I don't want to split the video clip, because the audio gets split as well, and the inserted still image will not have any sound.

I am editing some footage of an interview. I want to show the interviewee, and then cut periodically to some still images while the interviewee's voice can still be heard, and then return to the interviewee. The video clip's audio track needs to stay intact even as the display switches back and forth between the video and still images.

Thanks for any help.

This is tricky but it can be done. I'm no expert but here's how I would do it :

First of all did you know that you can extract the audio from a clip ? This is an option under the 'Advanced menu'. When you do this you get a copy of the audio in the 1st audio track.

Ok. Lets say that you have 2 stills to place in the middle of your clip. First split the clip at the 2 points where you want to insert the stills.
Next insert the clips.
Now adjust the length of the clips to the required time.
Next comes the tricky bit. At this point you should have on your storyboard :

CLIP 1 / STILL 1 / CLIP 2 / STILL 2 / CLIP3

Now you have to split clip 2 at a point equal to the length of still 1. For instance if still 1 is 5 seconds long then you have top split clip 2 5 seconds into it.

This gives you :

CLIP 1 / STILL 1 / CLIP 2-part 1(5seconds long)CLIP 2-part 2 (the rest) / STILL 2 / CLIP3

Now extract the audio from Clip 2-part1 and delete the clip. Align the 5 seconds of audio with Still 1.

Alternatively extract the audio frm the whole clip before you start splitting. Then you can split the clip and audio together.

I hope I havn't confused you. Good luck.

Thanks a bunch. I think I got the idea. That is a bit tricky, but seems doable.
