Have made 3 DVDs with my Dual 800 so far. The first one, of my sister in-laws 21st on iDVD 2 with the standard 1 hour high bitrate) doesn't work in her mums Yamaha player. This disc came with my tower. The second one I made was actually a direct copy via Toast of a non-encrypted (Im guessing) commercial DVD, which was on a disc later purchased from Apple, and this ran fine without a hitch. The third was of our daughter done vgain via iDVD 2 on the newer disc, but this time with the 1.5 hour variable bitrate setting, and again , this didnt work. Any info out there on the difference the authoring software makes on the ability of the player to read the disc? Toast works but iDVD doesnt.

you mention that the first DVD you made doesn't work on the Yamaha player; did you also try to play the third DVD you made on the same player? is the Yamaha player model supported? you can check to see if it's supported at this link:
http://www.apple.com/dvd/compatibility
okay, that still doesn't explain why the toast disc works, but it's a start.

All tested in the same player. 1st one, iDVD2, fixed bitrate and original disc = not working; 2nd one, toast and newer disc = working; 3rd one iDVD2, variable bitrate and newer disc = not working. Looks like the software to me. Havent got the player model number with me, but it states CD-R/RW compatible on the front. It tries to read the discs for a minute or so and then ejects them, so it knows that theres something in there. All 3 discs work in my 2 macs of course.

CD-R/RW != DVD-R
I have a Pioneer DV-444 and all of my DVD-Rs made with iDVD2 work fine.
They also work in mother-in-law's Sony DVP-S560D, but I cannot recommend this player, as I had one die on me just after warranty.
There is no problem with iDVD2.
If the disk doesn't play, it's your player.

signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

If you reread the post, the player is capable of reading the discs that Apple supply when recorded in Toast, but not ones created in iDVD, so it points to the software since the discs are all the same physically.

Anyone? Am currently trying iDVD 1 just to see if that works but at $11 per disc here in Australia, its not something I want to experiment with too much!

Hmmm...
Could it be a region thing? I don't know. Sorry to hear you haven't resolved this yet. Have you contacted Apple?
