I tried to download QT5 Preview a while ago, but about 90% through the install, I got a dialog box saying I was missing some (QT?) components, and the preview couldn't be installed. I believe the choices were quit or try later. In any case, now whenever I boot or restart, my initial screen includes a dialog box informing me that "Some of your QuickTime software failed to load because it is out of date. You can fix this problem by updating to the latest verson." The button choices are "Quit" or "Update Now".

If I choose "Update Now", I quickly get a dialog box saying "Some necessary information could not be found on the QT server. Please try again later". FINE, but in the meantime I get that blasted "QT s/w failed to load" box every restart. HOW CAN I GET RID OF IT?

There's nothing new in the StartUp folder/items. I've run the automatic Software Update routine just yesterday, and been advised that everything has been updated.

Whatever! I just don't want to see that stupid message anymore. Or get into that endless loop it leads to.

Hi,

open your extensions folder in the system folder... you will probably see that the versions of the quicktime extension and the versions of other quicktime modules are not the same (some modules are in the quicktime extensions folder, other modules are MPEG, Powerplug, Soundmanager, quickdraw3D...).

remove the file that are vesion 5something and reinstall QT4.x

hope this helps.

Worked like a charm! Many thanks, noliv. I was about to add my support to your "little suggestion'" re dead posts based on this and a couple of other lonely requests for help. I still think it's a good idea, and see there's getting to be a good number of others who agree now.

BTW, THEY'RE TAKING OVER! The next time I opened AppleWorks6 – WHOOMPH! – QT5 Public Preview was installing itself back on my hard drive. No questions about whether I might want it or not, just stand back! Happily, this time it's without the annoying out-of-date ad visory. Haven't checked yet to see if it might be Preview2.
