It depends on what CODEC the AVIs use. The '.avi' file is just a container (like the '.mov' file) that can contain multimedia of several different CODECs (Cinepak, Indeo Video, DivX, etc.).
Get the Indeo Video CODEC extensions from Apple and perhaps QuickTime Player will play the files. If not, you may want to look at the new WIndows Media Player 7 for Mac (you may hate it less than the old version 6). If the files use the DivX CODEC, you will need the DivX player.
Check out VersionTracker for the latest versions of each.

If by plug in you mean the Indeo extension then you just have to drop it into your system extensions folder and restart the computer. Quicktime Pro won't let you watch AVIs if you aren't able to view them currently.
If its a DivX CODEC then you need DivX player AND Win Media Player 6.3 it wont work without it. You may want to look into DivX4 Mac (versiontracker) I have not yet used it but it may work for you. The bottom line is that you need to figure out which CODEC the avi is before you know which type of player to use.[/LIST]

Indeo extension - didn't work
If its a DivX CODEC then you need DivX player AND Win Media Player 6.3
can't find Win Media Player 6.3... can only find 7.1
would this be easier in OS X?

You need to use the DivX Doctor command in the DivX player to correct the audio.

Well, you can blame Microsoft for the DivX mess. First they put in an early version of the video codec from the MPEG-4 specification in WiMP 6.3. Then, after all the confusion over it boils up, they remove it from WiMP 7 (for the Mac at least). Macs are the ideal multimedia platform. Just not when it comes to half-baked media software from Microsoft.
