any strong opinions (yea/nay) with regard to making your own CD labels? Are there issues concerning certain brands of labels and slot loading players?
Also, are there any label applying mechanisms to avoid or that are recommended?

You know, I used to use cd lables, but found that they tend to stick in slot loaders, so stopped using them. If you do, however, here's a good label software. http://www.magicmouse.com/

No problems using CDs with labels here, with computers that are slot-loading or otherwise.
The labels I prefer are at: http://www.cdstomper.com/stproducts.html
They have a great application device, too. I've been using it a couple years, with no foul-ups at all.
