This is a question posed to me which I am unable to answer. It is an interesting thought but is it worth the hassle when CD burners are cheap and getting cheaper? Media costs are significantly higher too if this method of back-up is possible. I am curious anyway and would appreciate all views.

"I am using a G3 powerbook and would like to know if there is any software/extentions out there that will let me use my sony dv cam as a data storage backup device via firewire, Is this even remotely possible? Using 9.1."

Thanks in advance

This came up on several mailing lists a while back. The conclusion was that yes, it is possible, but no, it is not practical. There would have to be a lot of error-correction built in, because DV tape is prone to dropouts or minor errors after repeated use (in most cases not noticible with lossy-compressed video, but it could destroy data). Also, it would be slow, and more expensive media-wise than using a dedicated data tape drive.

Hi Scott

thanks for your answer. I thought the media side would be impractical. I wasn't aware of the data loss dangers.

I can report back.

Much appreciated
