I am wondering about recording video input from a small surveillance monitor onto an iMac. I know there are USB analog video input converters. Does anyone know how well these work? Are there any similar products that use Firewire?

I don't know any similar product that uses firewire...
And you must know that the recoreded video is generaly uncompressed or compressed in M-JPEG... so it takes lot of space on the disk. That's why it's probably not a good solution for a surveillance video...

Depending on your software, you can use a DV camcorder to capture video via firewire. My Canon ZR10 is a webcam, analog convertor, and a digital VCR in addition to being a camcorder.
