We are having some video shot (short clips) for a CD based multimedia presentation (it is going to be put together in director). The people who are doing the recording/camera work say they are only able to get a non firewire digital camera, but it is being shot on to digital tape. Will I be able to use the Digital tape in a DV camera with Firewire (I am sure I can get one somewhere for an hour or two) to plug it into the Mac, or are the tapes in different formats for different cameras?

Well, the description is rather vague. A "digital video camera" could be anything from Digital Beta, DVCAM, DVCPro, etc. Also, if it is DV based, there's still the question of whether it uses the miniDV style tapes, or the larger DVCAM tapes. So, if the camera records on miniDV tapes in plain DV format, then you'll be able to play it. Everything else won't play in a consumer DV camera with FireWire.
