Searching this forum quickly revealed how to burn an SVCD from an SVCD or MPEG2 file downloaded from the net.

But how do you create an SVCD from iMovie DV streams?

Or alternatively, how do you create VCDs with quality a little closer to the DV-stream?

I am currently burning VCDs by exporting my iMovie via the NTSC plug-in for Toast, and then Toast converts to mpeg and burns. The resultant VCDs show clearly visible compression artifacts when viewed on large screen. Definitely not VHS quality; but certainly viewable.

I tried to, instead, export the movie full quality (and For iDVD) and then let Toast convert those to mpeg... but that actually resulted in *worse* quality VCDs, strangely enough. I guess Toast is having to convert to the proper resolution, and doesn't do as good a job as iMovie.

Is there any way to generate higher quality VCDs or SVCDs from an iMovie?

Thanks.
