When I bought Toast, I thought it could burn DVDs... well, I suppose it can, if it has exactly the info to burn... but it doesn't know how to convert an iMovie to DVD format.

I assume iDVD is what I need?
Is iDVD the only tool capable of converting iMovies to DVD format?
Can iDVD also gen MPEG2 for SVCDs?
Is iDVD all that I need to do this?

What is the quality of the MPEG2's? Is it equal to DV-stream? Or is there significant lossage due to the compression?

Thanks.

To burn DVDs with Toast you need to burn the T_S forlder after exporting from iMove to MPEG2 format which seperates and prepairs your file for DVD.Or DVD Studio Pro.
The easiest way to make a DVD is to get iDVD from Apple (20 bucks),it only runs in OSX. You just drop a Quicktime movie into iDVD's work window and click Burn DVD. Them go do something else for 2 hours.

You actually don't have to "go" do something else....you can do something else on your computer

Ahhh...the joys of a multi-tasking OS
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

I am assuming you don't have a built-in SuperDrive, because if you did you'd already have iDVD anyway. If you don't have a built-in SuperDrive, then you can't use iDVD. Or did you add a Pioneer A04 to your tower recently?

Actually, have you verified that's true with iDVD's conversion process?
Suprisingly, it is NOT true of the iMovie export process... if its not in the foreground, it stops. Very strange, but true.

Anyone know why (or even how) it is that iMovie doesn't multi-task (at least not during Export).

I have a super-drive and am running Mac OS X... should I have gotten iDVD for free? I thought it cost $20.

But when iMovie exports for iDVD, it just exports a .mov file... I don't see any T_S folder... Is it there and I am just not seeing it?

Also, if I understand right, iMovie doesn't convert to MPEG2 (or MPEG for that matter)... it just goes to a .mov with the desired resolution. It is Toast that converts to MPEG. And Toast doesn't know MPEG2 yet... that's what iDVD does. But iDVD doesn't convert to MPEG2 and give you the folder, rather it does the burn, hiding the files from you. (See the SVCD thread where I need to get that MPEG2 encoding (and folder). Right???

Thanks.

Well, at least now both the iMac and the PowerMac both include iDVD 2 for free when you buy them with a SuperDrive.

See here and here.

When did you buy the stuff, and did you buy the SuperDrive separately?

I just purchased a Pioneer A04 to install in my G4/450. I am hoping that there is nothing too it, other than unplugging the existing drive and inserting the new one. I also assume that OSX will automatically recognize the drive.

Is iDVD capable of importing a movie in VCD format and converting it to a DVD?

Here's a link to a how-to for turning it on...

It looks like you have two options:

1. Boot back into Mac OS 9 and use iDVD 2, or...

2. Kick down the $20 for the "Free" iDVD 2 upgrade.
