Hi all,
I created some QT photo slideshows using PhotoRelay (came w/ the Toast software) and have set up some links on an html page that point to each movie. I'm not trying to launch the movie in the browser; rather, I want to be able to ctrl+click the link and save the movie to my hard disk.
Here's the problem: When I save the movies to my hard drive and double click on the movie it doesn't play. QT launches like it's supposed to, but the movie won't play. If I try to open the movie from File>Open in QT I get an error that reads something like "QT doesn't understand this file type". I've even tried adding and removing the .mov extension.
I know these movies work b/c I created them and the originals play just fine when they are clicked. So why do they no longer work once I upload them to my server and download them to my harddisk?
Stumped,
Jason

did you try re-uploading the originals? maybe the server (or your computer or your ISP or some other part of the internet) just had a cow when you uploaded them the first time and the copies on the server are corrupt. Maybe you could even open both copies in a hex editor and search for differences to be sure...

Yeah, I actually tried uploading the files a few times. No success.
I did find that by stuffing or zipping the files I could get them to work once they were downloaded.

one more idea: if the last time you saved these movies was not with the Self Contained option in the Save As dialog, some of the movie data may have been stored in the resource fork of the file (instead of the data fork). When you transfer such files through a unix program (like anything running on the server), it will discard any data in the resource fork. Beyond that, I'm not really sure what is going on, but try saving your movies as new, self contained movies from quicktime pro and then uploading them. If you don't have quicktime pro, or don't want to sit there and wait for each file, I think you can use the Divx Doctor from www.3ivx.com to batch process the files. If you go into the preferences of Divx Doctor and set it to read non-avi files, it should do just what you want

Thanks!
So I upgraded to Quicktime pro and that seemed to solve the issue... on my Mac at least. When I view the movies in IE on Win2000 all I get is the control bar, but no images. Well, the images do show up only if I use the index drop down to select the images. Pressing play or toggling the left and right keys doesn't cause them to appear.
Anyone had this problem with Quicktime and Windows before?
Also, after I save one of the movies to my hard disk (Windows machine) and try playing it there (same results as above) all of my system icons and graphics become distorted.
Argh!
