If you really want to play the mpeg 2 stream. You could try this: Use "GNU vcdtoolsX" to make an SVCD. Create an disk image wth "toast". Then watch the SVCD image using "vlc". I know its a bit long winded but you can also burn the SVCD to CD and watch it on your DVD player provided it is capable or just for backup.

You don't need to create an image to watch the MPEG 2 file. Just open the file from within vlc.
