What's the easiest way to play AVI file. I'm running 9.1 and when I try to play it, I get the compression error message.

Sounds like it uses some form of the DivX codec.
You can usually check what compression format was used by selecting Movie-Get Movie Properties from QT Player. Then Choose Video Track and Format from the Properties window.

Anyway, to get a Mac DivX player go to: http://mac.divx.st/

You also need Windows Media Player *6.3* for the DivX Player to work. According to the DivX site MS has pulled it from distribution...

Of course it's always possible that your file just won't play on the Mac period. Not all variants of DivX are available for the Mac...

Not all are DivX, lots are still Intel codecs. Get the "indeo" codecs 3/4/5 from Apple or versiontracker or.....
But there are .avi files you won't be able to see neither with the indeo nor DivX codecs. I never found a decoder for "IV41" encoded files

There's an extension called "Windows Compressors" that adds activates even more .avi codecs. I originally got it from Microsofts site, but that was a long time ago.

f you want to be able to play ALL the formats, you'll have to spring for Virtual PC and run some of the movies
on the Windows side. Some of the codecs are CPU specific (require Intel MMX).

However, some typical Intel-oriented movies that you can play on the mac are available from
http://www.ntk.net/ballmer/mirrors.html. Choose the site closest to you, play the movies and then check into
