I am trying to play some Simpsons episodes that are all in AVI format. I am running 9.1 and Quicktime 5 and I can't get them to run. Quicktime attemptes to contact the Quicktime server and then gives me an error that it needs software that is not on the Quicktime server.

I want to make VCDs of these episodes as well.

Does anyone have ideas or suggestions on what I might try?

Quicktime (mov) and Media Player (avi asf wm) are containers. Each container has certain codecs, both audio and video. The ONLY way you can play a Media Player movie on QuickTime, and vice versa, is if both containers happen to use the same codecs for said movie.

Don't get mad if you put a Laser Disc on a record player and it doesn't
work. The two were never meant to be compatible.

You should be able to play avi files if you have the Indeo Video codecs installed. You can download them from Apple's website or here.

I have QT 5.0.2 and do not have problems playing avi files.

To make VCDs you can check this site out or download this tutorial. Look for the VCD portion....

Good luck!

But there are .avi files you won't be able to see neither with the indeo nor DivX codecs. I never found a decoder for "IV41" encoded files

If you want to be able to play ALL the formats, you'll have to spring for Virtual PC and run some of the movies on the Windows side. Some of the codecs are CPU specific (require Intel MMX).

However, some typical Intel-oriented movies that you can play on the mac are available from http://www.ntk.net/ballmer/mirrors.html. Choose the site closest to you, play the movies and then check into http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ulti...7&t=003111
