Hey, here's my problem...
I have a miniDVD which was created by a Hitachi mini DVD camcorder, which put the footage directly onto a mini DVD (i don't think i said that enough). Now i want to get the footage from that disc into iMovie. Is this even possible? Do i need the camcorder to import this stuff? Both iMovie and Quicktime don't see any of the files on the disc as being importable, but the Apple DVD player plays the footage fine. HELP!

You will have to open the MPEG2 file in Quicktime (you will need some extra plug-ins for quicktime) or another application and convert the MPEG2 file to a DV file - then you can import into iMovie or FCP....

You should think about getting a proper DV cam if you are interested in making videos on your mac.

Seeing as your Mac knows it's illegal to rip files from regular DVD video discs, chances are you won't be able to get the files from the DVD-ROM drive, so you should find another method rather than actually inserting the disc into your drive.

Does the camera have Firewire? If so, why not just use that to import footage?
