I used to be able to play every single AVI format in OS 9. Now that I use OS X, I can't view Video 3, 4 or 5 formats. I can view divX ok, but not anything else. I tried downloading the codecs for video 3,4, and 5 and putting them in my os x library, but nothing works. Any clues, and does anyone play AVI files ok in X?

I'm quite sure you're not going to be able to play Indeo movies in OS X for a long time, if ever. You're best bet is to re-encode them in Classic in a format that is still supported (on any OS). I've had good results with 3ivx. Please check your other thread in OS X general
