Just got a new iBook (600, 20GB, 256MB, etc) and hooked up my DV cam, hoping to edit video on the machine. However, I get very pixelized (?) input, kind of moscaic-y with random blotches of colored pixels when I import the clips. Also, the iMovie immediately cuts the video stream into mini-clips.

Do I need more RAM? Any settings to be tweaked? Help?????

I know I can count on you guys....

In addition to the wonderful advice you will receive here on the MacNN forums, you may want to check out the discussions forums on Apple's web site.

good luck,

... and we may find it very wantable you read the topic of the forums...

in other words: this topic fits more on the iBook forums as except of an ibook is a mac too has exactly nothing to do with imacs nor emacs

clean your camcorder heads. That tends to happen when the camcorder gets dirty. A cleaning cassette for MiniDV costs you about $12... but if you've got a particular sony, it wont let you record/play if the heads are dirty, so its well worth it..[/LIST]

This is more of a multimedia topic than iMac or iBook.

Moving there... please click through on the link at the top of the page.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I get very pixelized (?) input, kind of moscaic-y with random blotches of colored pixels when I import the clips
This happens when the DV stream is either corrupted, or not being read correctly off tape. More specific reasons, in order of probability:

1-Tape is going bad, either losing coating or was once in a player that didn't treat it well.

2-Tape was recorded in a camcorder that had significantly different head alignment than playback camcorder. If tape plays back fine in original camcorder, then this is the case.

3-The firewire connection is flakey. either the cable itself, or the connections on either end are bad/going bad.

Either way, you need to try to import another tape and see if you get the same problems. If so, try another camcorder for playback.

Also, the iMovie immediately cuts the video stream into mini-clips.
This is a feature. iMovie detects when the camera was started and stopped on a tape, and creates the clips based on that. Usually it's helpful, but sometimes not. I think it can be turned off in Preferences.
