okay, i just got a Radeon 8500 in my G4 (actually, a PC Radeon 8500 flashed with a Mac ROM ), and i hooked my vcr to the S-video out via the S-video to composite adapter. video looks fine on the TV.
so i go and put in a DVD, and i get the old 'screen goes bright, screen goes dark' while watching the movie. i remember a similar effect when trying to dub MacroVision protected tapes a long time ago. so is this copy protection on DVD's too? i've tried 3 commercial DVD's that i have, and they all do this. a DVD i made using iDVD2 doesn't.
could it be related to the fact that i'm using the composite adapter? i don't have an S-video input on my TV, so i can't try it out straight S-video to S-video.
if anyone out there is watching DVD's using the video out on their video card, do you have the same problems? also, are there anyways to circumvent this copy protection? i guess i could rip the DVD in 9 using DVDextractor, removing the copy protection, but that's a pain for every movie. i just want to pop in a DVD, hook up a cable, and be done with it...is that so wrong?

Ok, so I could be wrong here but I think it'll be because you have the Mac wired up to the TV via a VCR; from what I remember this causes the Macrovision protection to kick in.
Hook the Mac straight up to the TV and it should play fine.

You will have to go straight to the TV unfortunately. I had the same exact problem trying to use my ibook to watch DVD's on the big screen. I was using the convenient front jacks on my vcr and the screen did the old BRIGHT/DARK trick... stupid macrovision.

If you MUST hook through a VCR (if your TV lacks RCA hookups) you'll need to go to RadioShack or Best Buy or somewhere and get an RF Modulator. This removes your faggy macrovision.

yeah, that's what i was thinking, go the RF modulator route. back when i used to dub tapes with macrovision, i would use a coax out on the playback vcr into tv. and that tv had a coax monitor out, so i could just plug that into the dub vcr; that circumvented macrovison.
