I'm now wondering if it's worth buying a video camera such as the Canon m500i, with analog input. But while it supports analog in, does anyone know if I can just pass through analog video via the Canon to iMovie, without recording onto DV tape first?
Appreciate any assistance!

Check the Canon website and you should be able to find out if the camera supports on-the-fly conversions. I know that some Canons do, and some don't.
However, you don't necessarily need on-the-fly conversion. With my Canon Elura, I just record the analog video onto a DV tape in the camera, then download the DV tape to my Mac. It's an extra step but it's no big deal, and I'd rather have the camera than just a converter.
