Why do some of my mpeg files play just fine under quicktime and some just don't play at all. I can go over to my pc and they all work just fine. Any Thoughts?

I've had that problem also. I just changed the file type with
ResEdit to "MPG " and it worked. I don't know why but the files where downloaded as ".WAV" files and QT refused to open them.
I checked the associations panel in the Internet Control Panel but everything was fine.

The problem I am having is that on a Windows PC they play fine using Windows Media PLayer. On my Mac with Quicktime they play only only first 3 seconds and then end. If anyone knows how to fix this, please pass along.

There are a number of different MPEG standards - plain vanilla MPEG, mp3 (layer 3 of plain MPEG), MPEG-2, and more are being developed. QT 4 does not do MPEG-2, so if your files are in that format, you will need to find a different way to play them. QT 5 will have support for MPEG-2, but who knows when it will come out? QT also seems to have a hard time with variable bit rate MPEG files (of any persuasion).

apple's mpeg decoder is more strict than some others. It does not recogonize concatenated mpegs as being correct so it will play the first section but not the other x sections. (it is the way mpegs are supposd to work but...just because one or two break the rules it becomes expected(the logical conclusion on the mac to merge movie files would be to save as a QT movie; on the PC just tack one file to the end of another willy nilly )) One solution would be to un-concatenate the mpeg using a hex editor , a perl script or an applescript.
