What makes you think there will be a beta of QuickTime5?

Usually betas are released of software that has yet to be released. Like OSX.

QuickTime is in version 4 and version 5 is just the next version with some improvements. Improvements that tend to come with any update. (i.e. MPEG1 and mMPEG2 encoding/decoding.)

If you recall, Quicktime 4.0 was a "beta" product when they first released it. The version should be more then just Mpeg playback (which I love). It should also probably improve on streaming, as well as support flash 4 commands, possibly streaming flash, maybe show how to effectively modify a movie, and maybe even introduce the use of a new Sorenson codec, (although I haven't heard any inkling of this). Besides, why wouldn't you beta it when you realize you need to get it out there because you are releasing Final Cut Pro 2, and you have a brand new operating system waiting in the wings, why not say thaat it isn't finished? That way, when you make a huge change to it in the OS switch out, everyone would be expecting it. I don't know, what do you think?

Another thing that makes it sensible to say that they are releasing something is Media Cleaner 5 has been announced to start shipping in the beginning of October. It says it supports Mpeg 1 and 2 compression and decompression....can't wait
