I have an .avi file that QT won't play. Is there another .avi player that looks as good as QT that OS 9 can handle.

"avi" is just a "wrapper" for several different formats. We need to find out what format your avi is in. here's how:

1) open the avi in quicktime player
2) select the "movie" menu
3) select "get info"
4) now select "video track"
5) then select "Format"
6) at the bottom of the window you will see "Data Format:"

what does it say?

I can't even get QT to recognize it as a possible file to open. Origianlly it was a .cgi file and it said to change the extension to .avi. I hope that info helps.

Argh, that's a pain. What does the file's icon look like? What OS are you running? Do you know anything about ResEdit? This problem can most likely be fixed, but I just have to find out how, so fill us in!

The icon looks like a piece of paper with the upper right corner bent. I am running Mac OS 9.0.4. I have used ResEdit before, but it has been awhile and I just used it for icons, I think.

sometimes I've found .cgi files to be stuffed files. have you try to expand it with stuffit expander?

if that doesn't work.. here is a nice little contextual menu plugin. It's call "A Better Finder Creators and Types". It lets you right click (or contol click) on a file and chang what that file is associated with.

ABF Creators and Types

you can easily add as many creator and types as you wish. Their a alot already built in. I'm not sure if "avi" is listed but if you want to add it here it is:

Creator Code: TV0D
Type Code: Vfw

this will change the icon to a quicktime .avi icon.

after that, open up the movie in quictime and if it still doesn' playe do my instructions I stated above.

1) open the avi in quicktime player
2) select the "movie" menu
3) select "get info"
4) now select "video track"
5) then select "Format"
6) at the bottom of the window you will see "Data Format:"

what does it say?

hope this helps

I changed the creator code to TVOD and the type code to Vfw, but it didn't change the image of the icon. When I clicked on it, it opened QT, but it wouldn't play it. Also the Movies menu wasn't available. What next?

It might help if you could dig up the data format per bliz's instructions, but most likely this means that QT does not understand the data format that is wrapped inside the AVI. Another possibility is that the file is damaged. Maybe a perusal of www.download.com for players of other data formats would be in order... worth a shot.
