I want to play CD's on my mac without the CD in the tray. Is this possible? Will QT 4 Pro convert CD's to mp3's. Any help would be appreciated.

what you want is a CD ripper, makes CD tracks into MP3s... an example of this is Coaster, freeware

The best program you can use, in my opinion, is N2MP3 (http://www.n2mp3.com/)it works in the background, there's no real UI.
To convert audio tracks you just drag m to your desktop of HD. W
orks great in combination with Audion, the mp3 and cdplayer. http://www.panic.com/audion/index.html

Coaster will rip the audio from the CD but it saves it in AIFF format. To convert it to mp3 you need an encoder.

Check out the MP3 section of www.pure-mac.com and take your pick.
My favorite freeware encoder is CokaCoda, which can both rip the audio and then encode it to mp3.

SoundJam is also a good encoder & player. You can download a trial version for free. I think it will encode ten tracks before reverting to player-only.

C&G is also working on a version for Mac OS X. There was a preview for DP4, but issues arrose with the Public Beta release.

OS X allows yo uto trag the files form your CD to the desktop/folder and it converts them for you. No need to rip. Just drag and drop. But you need OS X PB, it will not work under OS 9.
