So I downloaded it wanting to see all this new stuff, but besides the interface not much has changed. No .mpg support. No Sorenson 3. No Realmedia file support. I don't have any flash files, so I don't know if it plays them or not. The interface is nice, but I would have thought there would have been a bit more to the release than that. Anyone find any real changes?

huh? you mean QT5 doesn't play mpeg1 video as QT4 already does?
i read QT5 final should also include QTVR authoring functions (ala the QTVR Authoring Studio 1.0 formerly sold by Apple).

And the other issue is "where is MPEG2 support?" This was one of the most anticipated things about 5...

Hi,
I just installed the QT5 preview, it works fine. I can now play more MPEG1 format movies than before. Although, I still found some color distrotion and skipping and some missing key technology in the preview version. I still perfer Mac users to download it right away. I can play Flash file as well.

Will QT5 support Realplayer files? Other than MPEG, what new formats will QT5 support?

Qt5 Beta plays .mpg movies as well as QT4, but it still does not play .avi files. I though someone said something about QT5 having MPEG4 built in. I was very disappointed that QT5 was not at least carbonized.

Just played with QT5 and the new cubic QTVR is worth the price of admission. Very cool even if it is similar to IPIX. Nice samples online. Also noticed QT5 still won't play some VideoCDs. Bummer. Player looks just like OSX version.
Too bad it doesn't handle a few more newer media types......

1) anonym, check the date on your computer, that might be the cause for QT preview to think it has expired ...
2) howdesign, the reason that QT on X beta looks similar is that in fact it is also a QT5 preview. You can check by playing cubic VRs ...

Should have been more specific with the "No .mpg support". I meant there wasn't much of an improvement since QT4. I haven't been able to play .mpg files I had lying around, except for a couple, so it seems like full MPEG1 support is still off in the future.
I just watched the keynote with QT5 and I have to say that it didn't skip as much as 4 used to. I've been watching about 15 minutes of it without loss in quality. A strange thing just happened, I was typing this and watching the keynote (QT being in the background) and QT just quit. No warning or alert afterwards, it just quit. Yet another bug. Guess that's why it is a beta. That "expired software" message is getting rather annoying too.

I have the same exact problem and the date is correct on my system.

I'm fairly disappointed with this release.
Here is what I thought were the most logical things to add:
* Support for MP3 playlists.
* Support for Navigation Services, document window proxies/Finder paths, yadda yadda yadda.
* Fixing that stupid interface. It looks better running under OS X, though that may be because I detest Aqua. I like the brushed-metal look, though not the QT4/Sherlock 2 implementation.
* Merging of the QT Player and the Picture Viewer. The Picture Viewer is not PPC native or scriptable, and the QT Player can open all the same file formats. Were the QT player able to load faster, it would do the job of opening pictures well.
* Additional formats, notable MPEG2 and RealVideo.
* Script Menu. OSA Menu = INIT, INIT = bad.
So, what did we get? The interface fixed. I'll buy Phil Schiller's reasoning about not including MPEG2; licencing can be such a bitch. It uses Standard File Dialogs that take as long to load as Navigation Services dialogs (which are paged to disk with VM on). No MP3 lists -- an MP3 player without a list is annoying, and a playlist including both MP3 and movie content is appealing. Playlists are so much more versatile than cutting the movies.
The scripting dictionary is a bit more robust, though it's not finished (it doesn't include the new connection speeds -- my next point). I appreciate the new connection speeds, though I'm wondering whether my 640k DSL line is better at 512k or 768k (it's exactly midway between the two). Setting QT settings is still [r/o]. Playback is about the same. The new movie icons are pretty sweet, though they blend into the white window background a little too much.
Incidentally, QT NavServices would be really helpful for more than just the player. Many programs use QT for importing objects, and even if they use NavServices for other standard dialogs, they'll use the QT SFP when making QT calls.
FWIW -- QT CAN handle .avi files, if you have the codecs. Some of the new .avi files are using a newer codec (after version 5) and are not decodeable.

I see no reason for apple to put playlist support into quicktime player. All that would do is pick away the shareware/freeware MP3 player software thats out there. Apple doesnt need to compete with that. If you want a simple mp3 player get greyamp. If you want something more intricite use Audion or even SJMP. Quicktime plays MP3's but its not an "MP3 Player"

Actually I believe this is caused by a file called "QuickTime QD3D" found in the folder "Quicktime Extenstions" which is in your Extentions folder. If you check it's version you'll see it is still version 4.1.1. Removing it seems to get rid of the message, though leaving doesn't seem to cause any problems other than the stupid message. Remember its Alpha

Haven't run into the problem with the expired software...did have some ... interesting audio sync issues while visiting the Z8 section of BMW's website (which makes heavy use of Shockwave...might not be related, but I don't remember having such problems while QT4 was installed).
I don't particularly care for the new icons. I suppose they look better under OS X.
And sadly, the middle button in the player window doesn't produce a genie effect under Mac OS 9. :-]

Tips for vewing some MPEG-4 ,avis.
MP42, MP43,MP4S component is included in Windows MediaPlayer Macintosh.
So, change Windows Media Player application's creator to 'thng' and put it into Extentions folder and restart your macintosh. Then you can see them with QuickTime Player :-)

So you are saying to take the actual Windows media application "Windows Media Player" and change the type to "thng" and drop it in the extensions folder? Then you can open .asf files with quicktime?

Yes, actual "Windows Media Player" application to QT component by change its type from "APPL" to "thng".
No, not a .asf, I mean .avi file that coded in MS-MPEG4.

Great tip. I wonder that would let me play "smr" movies as well? Also, I ran into some divx movies that neither divxplayer 1.0b8r2 on mac nor WMP 6.4/7.0 will play. I had to install some divx1.0a3 codec on pc from a third party site.

apparently the reason for the "expired" messages is a mix of QT 4 and 5. to remedy this, uninstall QT (expert option) and do a full install, this should work.

to be clear re: Solving the "out of date" startup error
The solution appears to be to remove all QuickTime extensions from the Extensions folder and then select to reinstall QuickTime 5. Selecting Custom Install from the QuickTime 5 Installer, selecting the Uninstall option, and then later reinstalling QuickTime 5 should also work.

How do you change the "type" of the Windows Media Player from "APPL" to "thng"? I'm kind of new to this. Do you need a special program?
