I'm having difficulties getting this thing to work: the installation went pretty smoothly, but when trying to configure (http://localhost:1220) the Webadmin-Page comes up, but the server does not start after entering a configuration, submitting and trying to start. The start-perlskript URL just shows up briefly in the browser, and that was it. Restarts did not help. Has anyone had more success?

The installation initially stalled until I unpacked the tar file with tar -xf instead of using Stuffit Expander. After that the installation went well. I tried to fire it up but got perl error in the web page. I restarted the machine and it worked.

The instructions said to unpack using the tar command, not StuffIt. I also had to restart before the PERL error went away.

I keep getting this when I load the web page:

Unauthorized

A password is required to administer this QuickTime Streaming Server. Please try again.

how do I set the password? I tried my root password and it didn't work. I found the qtpasswd utility but I don't know how to use it. Also, is there a tool for making hinted movies in OS X. And is PlaylistBroadcaster included, I can't find it.

thanks.

I, too, saw the perl error, and it disappeared on restart. Now, when I try to start it thru the web-admin, it just sits there says "Starting Up."

Any ideas on what the problem is?

That's not working for me.
"Unauthorized: A password is required to administer this QuickTime Streaming Server. Please try again."
Funny, QTSS had a GUI front in the original Mac OS X Server package... Why'd they get rid of it?

Worked great for me I have two servers running it very well. I have a 500MP with 512 RAM at home and a G4 400 here at work. Both ran without a problem.

Make sure you untar it then run the install, do NOT use Stuffit or OpenUp. Once you install it reboot for the services to kick in. Once it reboots log into:

(http://www.yourdomain or IP.com:1220)

L: admin
P: default

Go to settings to change the password to what ever you like. There is a config file in the QTSS folder to add and change ports should you need to.

Hope this helps

It sounds like you let Stuffit Expander decompress the .tar file. My install did the same thing, until I followed the instructions that Apple posted for decompressing it from the terminal.app. After I did it their way, it installed without a hitch, even though I'm using an "unsupported" PowerBook G3. I haven't restarted to see if it works yet though... darn perl error.

ok... I got the damn thing installed Now when I use my browser to log in as admin it tells me that it needs a password after I put one in... what's that all about.

QTPASSWD is located in:

/usr/sbin/

tried to create a new admin password but that did not work either. I am logging in through localhost. Maybe I should try the long way in...

Any ideas?

Normally I try not to rant, but...

<rant>
RTFM people. Username and password instructions were located on the page you DLed the QTS preview from. Instructions on how to change your username and password, also there. Instructions on how to unpack the preview and install it, also there (notice it says NOTHING about stuff-it!!!) Rather than just Dling and trying to force your way through an install on a BETA product, why not try and read what they have to say about it first?
</rant>

Ok, sorry for that. I had a long day of taking stupid tech support calls. Thanks for letting me use you as my ranting outlet

<rant> so if you try to reply on this board and use a name already taken it makes you go back and pick a different name but in the process losses your reply! Very M$ if you ask me...</rant>

ANYWAYS, here's my mileage and one reason that reading that darn manual doesnt always help.
8600, newertech G3 card, logged in as the normal user, I download the package, make explorer let me see it, and do the tar -xf thing. No go, cant make some temp file. I try stuffit, it seems to do it, I get a package, but it hangs on "Running pre-processing script". I think hard, then try re-logging in as root. tar -xf works, and the package installs. I use explorer to attach to port 1220 and see the admin page just fine. I try to change the admin password (in case you didnt know, ALWAYS change default passwords IMMEDIATELY.) It wont let me, although Im logging in from that machine. Now to figure out how to get the stuff streaming...

I too used StuffIt and got the Install hang. Finally bothered to read the instructions and got everything to work right. However, since rebooting the Apache webserver won't work. I'm a total newbie to this. Do I have to modify the Apache configuration is some way? Can they even run on the same machine? I was hoping to use the same box for hosting the html files that point to the QTSS.

Any Suggestions?

As it says in the INSTRUCTIONS.... Egggh
You have to connect to your server using the IP address of 127.0.0.1:1220/ That was step 4 in the instructions. You're right, they should have told you to log in as root. But most questions would have been answered if people just read the instructions. Took MAYBE 2 minutes. :::sigh:::
