I was quite impressed when I read that Apple finally added DLS and SoundFont support to QuickTime's MIDI layer. I've seen people with Windows computers on SoundBlaster Live cards augment and/or replace their built-in instrument sets with far superior samples.

The only problem is getting these things to work. How is applying SoundFonts done in QuickTime? The MIDI section of the QT control panel looks almost exactly the same except QuickTime calls its synth "Software Synth" now. I opened the QuickTime Music extension (in the QuickTime Extensions folder in the Extensions folder) with ResEdit and I found a DLS resource #0 that appeared to be nothing more than a DLS file. I replaced it with a DLS file and it rendered all my MIDI programs unusable. (Good thing I was working on a copy!) I also noticed a control panel-ish ICN# in there, and a STR resource of the same ID called "Music." My theory is there's a control panel that I'm missing even though I did a full install.

Has anyone successfully used sound fonts with QT5?

You're right. It's missing. This is a QuickTime preview. Not all CODECS (any) or features are active yet. From what I can tell, it sports a new UI and new VR. That's about it for now. They just got QT5 out the door becasue they are loosing the quality war with Real8 and WiMP7.

Well, I really don't think that QT5 will, in its current incarnation, be shutting up the people complaining about quality...

I agree... But it was a necesary step. If they did nothing, a lot more people would be very pissed off... I'm hoping Sorenson 3 is everything they say it's going to be. If not, I'm porting everything to my Real 8 servers. This is getting to be dumb.

Sigh.....MIDI support in QuickTime is still subpar. I installed the second QuickTime preview and no I have no sound from MIDI programs at all. Anyone else have the same problem?
