I've tried more than a dozen times to download the QuickTime 5 Public Preview, but have had no success. Each time I download the file I get one of a variety of errors when attempting to use the .smi file. If I download it with IE 5 I get a type 3 system error when attempting to mount the disk image. If I use NN 4.7 to download the installer, the disk image mounts, but the installer application itself reports that it is corrupted and quits. Some of the attempts to run the installer have also cause the system to report a checksum error.

Any clues?

I've tried this on three different machines on my network, and they all behave the same way. This got me thinking that there may be a problem with the way .bin files are going through my linksys DSL router. I've not had a chance to explore this further.

Since I don't have a DSL router and downloaded and installed QuickTime 5 on my iMac I'd recommend that you try downloading without the router as *it* maybe the problem or something else in the background caused it(Ex: downloading another huge demo or patch at the same time). If that solution doesn't work try trashing IE+prefs and restart from scratch, I've already had to reinstall IE 5 about 10 times due to user crashes or just buggy java sites..... this usually fixes some lost features in IE 5, like the download manager failing to have a window etc.
