Where is the vocal?

I am just getting started with MP3 playback on my Mac 500MHz G4 with DVD RAM drive. I used SoundJam 2.5.1 to rip files from CDs and then played them through new Monsoon 500 speakers to test them out. I was really disappointed to discover very weak vocal tracks, not at all like when I play the CDs through a regular CD unit. What am I doing wrong? I know that if everyone had this quality of playback, the MP3 revolution would have fizzled. Any help would be welcomed. Thanks.

SoundJam's encoder sucks. Try N2MP3 or Audio Catalyst.

Make sure you're not running SJ in karaoke mode. As you might guess, this mode attenuates the voice frequency range so the kiddies can sing along. A possibility worth checking.
