G4/450/DVD RAM/Zip
256 MB RAM
10 GB HD
OS 9.0.4

Multimedia Update 1.0
Apple DVD Player 2.2

Quicktime 5 PR has been installed since the first day of it's release. It's been that long since a DVD movie had been run. When I tried Saturday night it gave an error that the DVD software needed to be installed.

The software from the DVD Player 2.2 was reinstalled.

Original DVD software from OS 9.0.4 Install CD, then the DVD 2.2 software

Deleted Quicktime extensions/programs and preferences, and copied Quicktime 4 extensions/programs and preferences from backup.

Then did a re-install from the OS 9.0.4 Install CD, DVD software and the 2.2 software. This step finally got the movies to work again.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Oh yes,

I installed QT5 and my DVD's got messed up? And the software updater messed up too. I had to reinstall the whole system software again, it was such a pain. I am not going to touch beta software, forget alpha all together.

I'm running a similar setup: G4 Cube 450 Mhz, Mac OS 9.0.4, Apple DVD Player 2.2.1.

I installed the QuickTime 5 Public Preview over this and can still play DVDs perfectly.

Incidentally, my latest DVD is Toy Story 2 which I'd fully recommend as it's a great disc. Pixar has rendered the animation direct to digital video - no celluloid step involved. (There is even a cameo of Steve Jobs in one of the bonus features... 0.5 seconds of him chatting about Woody. To me this is proof that that hatchet-job book is just a fabrication of grossly distorted lies. No one involved in Toy Story could be such a monster, inc.)
